COVID-19 has diminished our personal worlds, both mentally and physically. Lockdown rules requiring us to ‘stay at home’ and ‘stay local’ have meant that we have had to live in our immediate geographical space, where our world has shrunk to what is directly around us. As a creative response, I decided to create a photographic record within the government guidelines of exercising once a day and staying local. February 2021 marks almost a year since the beginning of the first lockdown and conveniently occupies exactly four calendar weeks. My plan was that each day I would make a photograph on a large format camera with the ability to take close-up images. These would be of natural or manmade objects discovered on my daily walk; objects such as gloves, masks and discarded fast food packaging.

I have always been fascinated by areas of transition and have lived for many years in a place where the town meets the country. The debris of urban life inevitably spills out into the rural landscape, and the increase in the use of footpaths by exercise-seekers over a wet winter has inevitably led to conflict with local farmers, as winter cereals become trampled underfoot and pregnant ewes are troubled by dog walkers.

In the course of this project, as a solitary walker, my thoughts tended to drift towards the impact and effects of the pandemic. While some images are poignant depictions of the solitary winter landscape, many others reflect objects in isolation and the deliberate absence of people, whose presence is recorded solely in discarded objects. As a photographer who enjoys engaging with people and photographing them, often at close range, the past year has been a difficult one, for so many reasons.

Working with a large format camera, making negatives that could then be printed in a traditional darkroom. Hand Made Prints are 16 x 20inches and in limited editions of 25.
